Profile

Teaching artist with residency experience at the elementary level, with a concentration on employing enjoyable visual arts projects and exercises with students in a safe and creative environment, producing satisfying learning results within an established school curriculum.

 

Areas of Expertise

--Production of collaborative visual arts projects with students in order to create single or multiple images that incorporate curriculum content.

--Visual art exercises to develop art techniques, and familiarity with art tools.

--Specific experience in the creation of illustrations, and teaching the art of illustrating.

 

Teaching Philosophy 

Using my storytelling experience as an illustrator, and the theory of multiple intelligences, my goal is to help each student tell their own unique story, create art in their own distinctive way, and draw knowledge from a school’s curriculum in their own singular fashion.

 

Education/Training

---2014: three day teaching artist training with Everyday Arts for Special Education (EASE) to facilitate working with students who have special needs. 

---2013: one day training conference with the Arts in Special Education Consortium (ASEC) to engage in practices that will aid in working with students will special needs.

-- 2013: teaching artist training with children on the autism spectrum through the Marquis Studio/PS 37 Teaching Artist Training Institute.

--2010-2013: teaching artist training with Studio in a School, New York, NY.

--2012: participant in The Center for Arts Education series of professional development salons, New York, NY.

--2010: graduate of the Community Word Project’s Teaching Artist Training and Internship Program, New York, NY.

--2010: graduate of the Staten Island Teaching Artists Institute.

--1976: Summa Cum Laude graduate of Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York. B.F.A. in Communications Design/Illustration.

 

Teaching Experience

--July 2014  PS 13, PS 22, PS 124, Staten Island and NY, NY -- Teaching Artist --  Five one and a half hour summer school residency sessions with third to fifth grade English Language Learners in three different schools, under the auspices of The Center for Arts Education;  using art lessons to improve the use and understanding of the English language.

--May-June 2014  PS 20, Chrisy J. Cugini School, Staten Island, NY – Teaching Artist – Five one-hour school residency sessions with three third grade classes under the auspices of the Staten Island Children's Museum; using watercolors and their techniques to study and create portraits of insects.

--May-June 2014  PS 69R, Daniel D. Tompkins School, Staten Island, NY – Teaching Artist – Five two-hour after school residency sessions with students on the autism spectrum, along with their parents under a Parents as Arts Partners grant through the Center for Arts Education; various visual art techniques, along with an emphasis on improving literacy.

--May-June 2014    PS 676K, Red Hook Neighborhood School, Brooklyn, NY --  Teaching Artist - Six day residency with Pre-K, K, and first grade classes under the employment of Studio in a School; collage and puppetry techniques with a tie-in to class curricula.

--February 2014   PS 16R, The John J. Driscoll Elementary School, Staten Island, NY -- Teaching Artist - Three day residency with fourth and fifth grade classes under the employment of Studio in a School; designing and painting women's shoes for an exhibit and fundraising auction.

--November 2013-May 2014    PS 16R, The John J. Driscoll Elementary School, Staten Island, NY -- Teaching Artist - Twenty week residency with fifth grade classes under the employment of Studio in a School and Arts Achieve; working as a facilitator and teaching artist with the school's art teacher; various visual art techniques, along with an emphasis on documentation and using technology; working towards creating a standardized art exam for public schools.

--2013- 2014   PS 74R, The Future Leaders Elementary School, Staten Island, NY -- Teaching Artist - Two year residency with first grade classes under the employment of Studio in a School; various visual art techniques, along with an emphasis on improving literacy.

--2013, PS 45, The John Tyler School, Staten Island, NY -- Teaching Artist - Twenty-four session after-school residency with kindergarten classes under the employment of Sundog Theatre. Various visual art techniques, along with an emphasis on improving literacy.

--November 2010 –June 2012, PS 74R, The Future Leaders Elementary School, Staten Island, NY -- Teaching Artist - Two year residency with pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade classes under the employment of Studio in a School. Various visual art techniques, along with an emphasis on improving literacy.

--2012, SMB Studio Arts, Inc., Staten Island, NY -- Teaching Artist –Six week after-school residency with high school age student. Visual art techniques used in the process of creating science fiction and fantasy illustrations.

--2012, PS 26, The Carteret School, Staten Island, NY -- Teaching Artist - Twenty-six session afterschool residency with first and second grade classes under the employment of Sundog Theatre. Various visual art techniques, along with an emphasis on improving literacy.

--2011, The Staten Island Children's Museum -- Teaching Artist - Twelve weekend residency with children ages three through ten, instructing in collage, pen and ink, and colored pencils, while mentoring education students from St. John’s University.

--2011, PS 57, The Hubert H. Humphrey School, Staten Island, NY -- Teaching Artist - Six Saturday “Parents as Partners” residency under the employment of Sun Dog Theatre. Entitled, “The Art of Eibs Pond.” Various visual art techniques used to depict the elements that make up the ecology of the pond.

--2010, PS 861, The Staten Island School of Civic Leadership, Staten Island, NY -- Teaching Artist - Ten week residency with sixth grade classes on the theme of illustrating and arts-based literacy. Writing and illustration techniques.

--2010, PS 31, The William T. Davis School, Staten Island, NY -- Teaching Artist Internship - Three week internship residency with fourth grade special education class under the direction of teaching artist, Emily Ellison. Various visual art techniques in connection with children’s books.

--2009 - 2010, PS 132, The Juan Pablo Duarte School, Washington Heights, NY -- Teaching Artist Internship - Eighteen week internship residency with second grade class on the theme of community and our place in it. Poetry writing and visual art techniques.
